Why Tutoring? |
|
Classroom performance and confidence are almost always
enhanced when a student receives one-on-one attention.
During the day, students often compete for their
teacher’s time and energy with dozens of other students,
making it difficult to get ahead. Students can be
tutored for a variety of reasons: to improve their grade
and/or performance in a subject area, to supplement
instruction at school or, to prepare for college entrance
exams. If your child is falling behind, or working to
get ahead, Tutoring In Your Home can help. |

When should I get a tutor involved? |
When faced with a child who is struggling in school or
one who wants the opportunity to improve his/her
knowledge in a subject area, parents need to determine
if a tutor can make a difference. Parents need to
consider why and when their child requires a tutor. A
tutor can reinforce subjects that are taught in school
by explaining concepts and discussing ideas, giving help
with homework questions, providing study strategies for
quizzes and tests, as well as teaching students how to
work independently.
Parents, before starting a tutoring program, explain to
your child why you think a tutor is needed and what a
tutor does. Talk about what you hope will be
accomplished with a tutor. Some students are not passing
classes and need help to catch up. Some children just
need to brush up on certain skills, and some kids want
tutoring so they can get ahead. As a parent, you can
help your child feel comfortable with the idea of
getting help. After tutoring has started, reinforce and
praise your child for participating and try to review
what is learned during the sessions. |

How can I obtain the right tutor? |
The right tutor is someone who has been prescreened for
their background and abilities. While an advanced degree
ensures that the tutor knows the subject matter, you
also need to consider other qualities such as
communication skills, patience, and experience working
with students at your child's grade level. Other things
to look for when selecting a tutor are training, work
experience, and references.
Tutoring In Your Home, LLC has taken the time to do the
up-front screening, so you don’t have to. We only
contract tutors who are experienced and proficient in
the subjects they teach and who also possess superb
references. We carefully match your child’s needs with a
tutor in our network. If you find that a tutor is not a
“good fit” for your family, we will gladly send you a
different tutor from our network. Your child’s education
is our top priority.
After starting with a tutor, monitor your child’s
progress. Your child should become more confident with
the subject matter and their study habits should
improve. Check in regularly with your child’s tutor in
order to track your child’s progress. |

Where and when should your child be tutored? |
A child should be tutored in a comfortable environment.
The home is an ideal place to be tutored. Tutoring
should be scheduled at a time of day when your child is
ready to learn. After-school hours are the most common
time for tutoring, but this time of day can also be a
time when students are tired or distracted by other
activities. Always allow for breaks from their school
routine.
In our experience, the ideal length of time for a
tutoring session is one hour per day, sometimes longer
in certain situations depending on age and attention
span. Tutoring for more than an hour can be burdensome
on even a mature student, especially if s/he has been in
school working hard all day. On the other hand, if a
session is shorter than an hour, it is difficult to
accomplish what is necessary. For best results, sessions
should be scheduled 2-3 times per week. Before beginning
a tutoring program, be sure you and your child can
commit to the time requirements of tutoring. |
